Standing over a thousand metres above sea-level is the island’s highest peak, Mount Liamuiga. If you’re up for a challenge, then this is it! Hiking up this volcanic mountain takes about six hours and can be quite formidable due to the rugged terrain and steep inclines. However, the panoramic view from the top is certain to make this difficult “jungle climb” feel worthwhile. The Dos D’ane Pond Hike is also physically demanding – and muddy – but immersing yourself in the rainforest is deeply rewarding, and the summit has a novel mountain pond and a picturesque waterfall. If you’d like your hike to include rock climbing and root grappling, then choose to tackle Nevis Peak. The trail is open throughout the year and is beautiful in every season. On the days you want to take it easy, hike up Monkey Hill and take in the sights of Basseterre, the largest city – and capital – of St Kitts and Nevis.

Zipline through the jungle at speed.

Get your adrenaline fix by shooting over the jungle canopy at speeds of up to 80km an hour. Sky Safari Tours is a scenic eco-adventure and includes five different cable lines extending over the rainforest and Wingfield River. The longest line is over 400m and nearly 80m above the treeline. There are special rates for residents, and ziplining is a popular choice for thrill-seekers on the island. The full guided tour lasts two to three hours.

An ATV tour is a fast and fun mix of island history and off-road adventuring. Explore old forts, wind your way past plantation ruins, and experience the lush terrain of the Mother Colony of the West Indies.’ You can even stop at the 17th-century sugar and rum plantation once owned by Thomas Jefferson’s ancestors. With over 20 dive sites, four of which contain wrecks, the sea at St Kitts and Nevis is an underwater paradise. Colourful coral, sea fans, and sponges are easy to admire, and the water teems with marine life. Snorkel in White House Bay to see the tropical fish or look out for stingrays and turtles on a dive at Ballest Bay. If a night dive followed by drinks and a barbeque sounds good to you, then be sure to check out Turtle Bar Reef. The River Taw is a sunken cargo ship, and a must-see for snorkellers and divers alike.
